A project celebrating the region's park life is asking people to add to a gallery of 'then and now' photos.

Historic England are hoping that a collection of postcards evoking bygone times at parks in Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft inspire fresh perspective on the scenes.

The heritage body's archive holds thousands of images of parks and gardens across England, including a collection of historic public park postcards from the Nigel Temple Collection.

Mr Temple, who was born in 1926 and died in 2003, was an artist, postcard collector, antiquarian and an authority on garden design.

His images include the Venetian Waterways in Great Yarmouth, Belle Vue Park in Lowestoft and Norwich's Chapelfield Gardens.

This summer, Historic England is inviting people to add a new perspective to the images by adding their own photos to its Missing Pieces Project - a series of 'then and now' photos of the parks.

A man named Robert Walton has already contributed a contemporary picture of the lily pond at the Venetian Waterways.

His image contrasts with a postcard of the same place taken sometime before 1940.

Rachel Prothero, Historic England head of content, said: “The Nigel Temple Collection of postcards gives us a wonderful snapshot of a moment past in some of the beautiful parks and gardens to be found across the country.

"We’d love for people to add their photographs of the same locations so we can see how these cherished landscapes look today and add to their story.”

People can visit the Missing Pieces website to view the postcards before visiting the park itself, taking a photo of the same location and uploading the image to the Missing Pieces Project.

This year Historic England (HE) is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the National Heritage Act, which established the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, as HE was then known.
