They are a reminder of a bygone age and a thriving fishing industry in Lowestoft.

With the replica net drying and repair racks on the Denes area harking back to the heyday of the herring trade, views are now being sought on their future.

Situated at The Ness in Lowestoft - a £1m park and gateway that holds the unique position as the most easterly park in the UK - Lowestoft Town Council is seeking views on the future of the 'Drying Racks'.

With a survey being launched, a town council spokesman said: "The Ness is Britain's most easterly park and includes replicas of the Drying Racks.

"These wooden structures would originally have been used by the fishing industry for the nets during the heyday of the herring trade.

"When The Ness underwent a £1m regeneration project - with funding secured from the Coastal Community Fund - the Drying Racks became part of the augmented reality app to celebrate their history, alongside panels to give information on their history and use.

"The areas around the Drying Racks contain havens for wildlife, unique flora and fauna.

"The current Drying Racks are understood to be replicas of the originals, constructed in the 1950s.

"Many of these are suffering rot and decay. Repairs to the structures is likely to be extensive and expensive, with the price of timber widely reported to have significantly risen and with over 50 per cent of the wooden structures needing complete replacement."

With the survey looking to "ascertain what members of the public would like to happen to the 'Drying Racks' - questions include: "Given the condition of the 'Drying Racks' would you like to see them replaced with new replicas (replacing the existing 1950s replicas)?"

People are being asked to submit their views to the survey by Friday, August 4.

"Submissions will then be collated and presented at the Parks and Open Spaces sub-committee meeting on August 15," the town council spokesman added.
