A prominent holiday park could be extended, despite concerns over access and an increase in traffic.

Agricultural land in Pakefield, Lowestoft could be transformed as plans for a new development look set to be given the green light.

An extension of Pakefield Holiday Park will be voted on next week, with councillors being told that planning officers recommend approval of the scheme.

Plans centring around "Extension of Pakefield Holiday Park to provide for the following development on land to the west of the park" have been lodged by agents Savills (UK) Limited on behalf of Park Holidays UK Ltd.

This includes "a new and improved access and main site entrance off the A12; new entrance buildings and clubhouse facility; the siting of additional static holiday caravans, involving the rollback of existing static caravans away from the coast and environmental improvements and landscaping throughout", which will be discussed by East Suffolk Council's planning committee north on Tuesday, August 8, in Riverside, Lowestoft.

The scheme earmarked for "land to the southwest of the existing site, currently in use as agricultural land," would include the additional "siting of 86 units."

With Pakefield Holiday Park "an established static holiday caravan park", the application site covers an area of "approximately 4.2 hectares (10.4 acres)", a planning design and access statement from the applicant concludes: "The proposals are demonstrated to provide significant benefits for the site and wider area."

Numerous concerns, including the "impact of new access on safety along the A12", "increased traffic" and "noise", feature among 60 objections with Lowestoft Town Council and Gisleham Parish Council both recommending refusal of the plans - although 24 "representations of support" have also been received.

A planning report to councillors states: "The proposed new access from the A12 is deemed safe by officers in consultation with Suffolk County Council Highways Authority, and it would also provide a benefit by removing a significant number of vehicle movements from the existing site entrance off Arbor Lane."

Recommending "Authority to approve" the plans, subject to numerous conditions, it concludes: "The proposed development is a logical extension to The Park providing significant economic benefits and supporting an existing tourism use."
