A parish council has pledged to seek improvements to road safety in a Suffolk village where a man died in a crash.

The A12 was closed in both directions in Wrentham on Friday afternoon (August 25) after a collision at the junction with Walker Gardens involving a pedestrian and a DAF lorry.

The pedestrian - a man in his 60s - died at the scene.

Ian Watson, chairman of Wrentham Parish Council, said: "Our thoughts go out to the man’s family and friends, and all those people who were at or near the scene, including the emergency services, who have been impacted.

"Investigation is ongoing as to the cause of the accident, but we know our local community live with the busy A12, bisecting the village, every day, with speeding traffic and the dangerous Crossways junction with the A12, Chapel Road and Southwold Road," he said.

At the weekend, residents said the crash was not the result of speeding but that motorists driving above the speed limit is a problem in the village.

Mr Watson said that road safety is "the number one concern" for the parish council and that they will continue to lobby Highways and the county council to make improvements to the Crossways junction, divert HGVs from using Chapel Road and install more traffic calming signage.

"The parish council has invested a significant amount of funding into Vehicle Activated Signs, and in the next few weeks we have new signs going up to replace and complement our older signs," he added.

In July, Wrentham Parish Council discussed crashes in the village – especially at the Crossways junction where the roads to Beccles, Southwold and Covehithe converge with the A12.

Police are appealing for witnesses to Friday's incident. Anyone with information can contact the Joint Norfolk & Suffolk Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference CAD 194 of August 25.
