A town council is set to celebrate Black History Month once more with the return of a competition for young people.

Lowestoft Town Council will once again be marking Black History Month with a writing competition that is open to all young people that live in the town, or attend a school in Lowestoft.

And this year, for 2023, the regular writing competition is being expanded with the introduction of a visual arts competition that gives another opportunity for young people in the town to enter and celebrate inspirational BAME people.

With the theme for both competitions being 'inspired and proud', the contests are encouraging participants to think about the people who inspire them and make them proud, from the past to the present.

Mayor of Lowestoft, Sonia Barker, said: "I am delighted that Lowestoft Town Council are once again holding a competition to mark Black History Month in 2023.

"With the introduction of the new visual arts element to complement our successful writing competition, we hope that this year will see even more submissions as we look to celebrate the BAME people who inspire us and make us proud.

"Good luck to everyone who enters.

"I cannot wait to see everyone's creativity on display."

The two competitions share the same age brackets with categories for up to and including year 2, years 3-6, years 7-11 and years 12-13.

Participants can enter both the writing and arts competitions.

For the creative writing contest, judges are welcoming entries across a range of writing formats – from poetry to dramatic monologues and short stories.

The visual arts competition welcomes any art entry, such as a collage, sculpture, drawing, painting or graphic design.

Submissions should be sent to admin@lowestofttowncouncil.gov.uk by Friday, October 20 and should include the child’s name, the age category and school/youth group (if applicable) with prizes awarded in November.
