A block of garages in Lowestoft look set to be demolished with new homes replacing it after plans were given the go-ahead.

A scheme centring around "demolition of garages to provide two dwellings with off road parking" has been given the green light.

Approval has been granted for the demolition of a garage block "consisting of 10 attached garages" on Melbourne Road with two semi-detached two storey homes to be built.

With plans submitted to East Suffolk Council in March by Graham Nourse Planning Consultants Ltd on behalf of the applicant Richden Homes Ltd, it said: "The application site is located on an existing garage site consisting of 10 attached garages accessed directly from Melbourne Road.

"It is considered that the site is also capable of comfortably accommodating two dwellings in semi-detached form."

With one parking space provided for each home, along with car charging points, it added: "In summary the proposed scheme makes effective use of the site area, providing two new dwellings within a high-density urban area."

The scheme was "permitted" by East Suffolk Council under delegated powers.

A report from a delegated officer at the council said: "Planning permission is sought for the demolition of the existing garage court and construction of two semi-detached two storey dwellings.

"In conclusion, the principle and detail of the development is considered to be acceptable and in compliance with relevant development plan policies and the National Planning Policy Framework."

With one objection from a resident citing fears around the "overdevelopment of the site" and "parking difficulties," Suffolk Highways "raised no objections to the application".

Recommending the scheme for approval subject to conditions, a decision notice letter from the council stated: "Permission is hereby granted by East Suffolk Council subject to compliance with conditions."
