Investigations are under way after a derelict building on a former factory site was targeted in another suspected arson incident.

Firefighters spent more than two hours tackling a blaze in an empty single storey building at a waterfront site that has been vacant for over 13 years.

Five fire crews from Norfolk and Suffolk tackled the blaze at the former Jeld Wen joinery factory on Waveney Drive in Lowestoft on Thursday night - five months after a similar blaze at the vacant site.

Police investigations have been launched in connection with the fire, which is "being treated as arson."

Two crews from Lowestoft South fire station, a crew from Southwold fire station and two Norfolk crews - including an aerial ladder platform from Great Yarmouth fire station - responded at 5.31pm on September 28.

They were called following reports of a fire at a single storey derelict factory site.

A Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service spokeman said the derelict building measured 200 metres by 200 metres.

"The fire affected a 10m by 10m area of the derelict factory from floor to roof," the spokesman said.

"Firefighters used hose reel jets and breathing apparatus whilst extinguishing the fire," with no injuries reported as the scene was cleared by 7.48pm.

The latest blaze comes after six fire crews tackled a 40m by 40m derelict building fire on part of the former Jeld Wen timber factory site on April 25, which was treated as suspected arson.

The 36-acre redundant industrial site, which is in private ownership, was once home to Boulton and Paul - who opened its joinery factory and timber yard in 1962.

After the American-owned timber company Jeld Wen took over the joinery factory in 1999, it shut in June 2010 with the loss of more than 190 jobs.

It has been vacant since then - despite forming part of an area around Lake Lothing earmarked for a major transformation.

Of the latest blaze, a police spokesman said: "It is being treated as arson".
