A cluster of Suffolk villages is bidding to become a dark skies parish so that its residents can enjoy gazing at the stars.

The green and environment group at Ashby, Herringfleet and Somerleyton Parish Council is currently investigating the possibility of attaining Dark Skies status - which would encourage residents to minimize light pollution.

Doug Owen, 59, parish councillor, said there is "widespread support" among residents for the idea.

"We are currently trying to generate interest in the community and to reconnect people with the night sky," he said.

As things stand, there are no streetlights in the villages - but there are concerns that as housing developments continue - like at Mill Farm on Station Road - that might change.

"This is something the parishioners are keen to guard against," Mr Owen said.

Dark Skies Village status would mean that residents would not be restricted from having external lighting but they would be encouraged to install motion sensitive lights.

"It would not be draconian. People need to be brought along with it, not forced into it," Mr Owen said.

There would also be exceptions like at Christmas.

Mr Owen said: "I'm interested in the night sky. I'm worried more and more about the impact of light pollution on wildlife and on humans.

"It's a passion of mine. If we do get Dark Skies Village status, that would be an enduring legacy for the village," he added.

Questionnaires will soon be delivered to residents in the parish asking for their views on the plan and whether they would support Dark Skies status for the villages.

The parish council also wants to organise a Dark Skies walk or a wildlife and bat walk and take part in a star count in February.

The questionnaire can be returned to Somerleyton Cycles by November 17.
