A man has faced off with workers from a telecoms company wanting to build a 5G mast on a grass verge.

Michael Garman, 69, says he is the owner of a patch of land outside his house on the corner of Carlton Road and Kirkley Park Road in Lowestoft.

In March, East Suffolk Council gave permission to Cignal Infrastructure Limited to install a 15m mast on the site to provide 3G, 4G and 5G to the area.

A spokesperson said the council sent a letter to all households in the immediate area, including Mr Garman's house, and that a site notice was put up on January 13, advertising that an application had been submitted and inviting comment.

But on Tuesday (October 17), Mr Garman first sat on a deckchair and later parked his car and mobile home on the grass verge to stop the workers from installing the mast.

And the next morning, a trench had been filled in while the digger and Mr Garman's campervan had been removed from the site - the work having been put on hold.

"It states on my deeds it's my land," Mr Garman said.

"The council adopted it in 1966 cause it was an accident blackspot and they took over maintenance."

It is believed the land was adopted by Suffolk County Council who said its Highways Records team would be able confirm ownership of the land next week.

Mr Garman said that when he bought the house in 2021, it never came up in the searches the land was not his.

"The council do not have the right to say what happens on my land," he said.

A spokesperson for East Suffolk Council said: “During the consultation stage of the planning application for the mast, a number of local residents were consulted and a notice detailing the planning application was displayed at the site.

"We did not receive any formal comments regarding the application.”
