A suspicious package that was discovered in Lowestoft has been blown up.

It was located near the Aldi store in the Gateway Retail Park in Tower Road.

Police put a 100-metre cordon in place in front of Aldi and The Gym Group in the Gateway Retail Park.

A huge emergency service presence was at the scene including several ambulance crews and a bomb disposal unit.

It is understood that the bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion and that the package was full of batteries.

Suffolk Police said road and building closures in Tower Road and the surrounding area have now been lifted after the "suspicious item was not found to pose any threat to the public".
