GERALD Hogg's remarks (May 15) I believe are on the ball as far as the answer to MPs' London accommodation expenses are concerned.

Halls of residence are used by students of London University and a similar purpose-built scheme could be adopted for our MPs with a reasonable bedsitting room with en suite facilities, possibly with common room and refectory facilities included to provide the MP with adequate rest while in London.

Also in the news last week was the sad news of the death of Jack Thain, who campaigned tirelessly for the benefit of pensioners of this country (mainly at his own expense) who worked with other selfless people to establish the pensioner movement in Lowestoft, Suffolk, Norfolk, East Anglia and England as a whole.

What a contrast this makes to the antics of some MPs who have besmirched the honour of their house and the calling of MPs in general.

To his credit our MP Bob Blizzard paid Jack a fulsome and well-earned tribute upon his retirement from active duties for the movement last June.

Jack told me then he would always treasure this recognition of his work very much and of those tributes paid him at the same time by senior colleagues in the pensioner movement.

Sadly, it was not long after this last summer that Jack fell ill but his example of Christian selflessness and care in working for the good of others will long be remembered.
