About 20 campaigners descended on County Hall in Norwich with a lengthy petition to try and force councillors to withdraw plans to rip up the scenic wood and turn it into a quarry.
The forest at Fritton is on a list of 100 pieces of land that the council wants to convert into mineral extraction sites to provide three million tonnes for house, school and road material in the next 15 years.
The petition was handed in by the Fritton Action Rescue Group and Tony Wright, MP for the area, in an early bid to get Waveney Forest, a popular haunt for walkers, removed from the list.
The council is due to publish its preferred choice of quarry sites next year.
Jan Burton, from the action group, said: “I think the council was shocked by the number of names we had on the petition.
“In fact I had 600 letters delivered on my door stop asking to be added to the list.
“Today is all about making more people in Norfolk and Suffolk aware of what may happen to this wonderful forest.”
