Delays are expected in a town centre again as work begins to repair a damaged sewer and manhole on a major town junction.

Anglian Water has begun work on repairs on the left hand lane of the Commercial Road junction of the A47 in Lowestoft.

The repair, which began on January 16, has started with excavation work to uncover the extent of the damage, and it is expected to last for eight weeks.

The work is taking place nearby to repairs Anglian Water had to make last year when a sinkhole appeared in the town centre.

Anglian Water anticipate this being completed by the middle of March.

Due to "the localised nature of the work area", the company say they expect no impact on service and customers can still continue to use their toilets and washing machines as normal.

A full diversion route is in place to ensure that local road users can still continue to turn right into Commercial Road. Access for the emergency services will be maintained throughout the duration of the repair.

Regan Harris from Anglian Water said: "We appreciate this sewer is on a busy road and we're very sorry for any inconvenience the work may cause. We hate disrupting customers and road users, but the work needs to be carried out and we'll be doing everything we can to minimise disruption.

"Damage to pipes like this can be caused by localised ground movement, and in Lowestoft especially, the soil is very loose and sandy, making it prone to moving."

The water company will have teams working to repair the sewer between 7.30am - 5.30pm on weekdays, with weekend work taking place if required, to complete the work as quickly as possible.
