Action is being demanded to tackle the problem of speeding drivers on a main route through north Lowestoft.

Police have already carried out operations to target speeders in Bentley Drive and a local councillor has called for other traffic-calming measures to be carried out.

John Fryers, who represents the St Margaret's ward on Waveney District Council, said: “Bentley Drive was never designed to carry the weight of traffic it currently does and the way it meanders makes it a favourite for boy racers.

“I contacted the police about the speeding problem and they responded very quickly, putting on a high-visibility speed check using handheld radar guns.”

Proposals for a northern spine road to take traffic away from residential streets in north Lowestoft has been in the pipeline for some time, but it is not known when this will be built.

Mr Fryers added: “Even if the northern spine road was completed, which would reduce the weight of traffic on Bentley Drive, I would suggest that with a clearer road, the boy racers may be tempted to drive at higher speeds. I will be pressing for traffic-calming measures along Bentley Drive before anyone is seriously injured.”

A police spokesman confirmed operations to target speeding motorists were ongoing.

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council said there were no plans to introduce traffic-calming measures, although new signs highlighting the 30mph limit were in the process of being put up. She added that a future northern spine road would reduce pressure on Bentley Drive.

Mr Fryers holds regular surgeries for residents of the St Margaret's ward on the third Tuesday of each month at the Hollingsworth Community Hall.
