A Suffolk brewery will help to clean up a beach in their home town of Southwold as our Big Coast Clean Up continues.

Adnams, who have been running beach cleans since 2003, organised their second beach clean of the year on Saturday, June 9.

An impressive 61 volunteers combed the Denes at Southwold, collecting 32 bags of rubbish with more than 400 items picked up from the beach.

Statistics provided by Adnams show a clear trend of a year-on-year increase of rubbish found on the Denes in Southwold, with the average number of items collected per 100m rising from 2.56 in 2014 to 3.89 in 2017.

Alongside this, statistics show plastic is by far and away the biggest contributor to rubbish on our beaches, with the percentage for plastic out of all the rubbish collecting only dipping below 70pc only once in the last seven cleans.

A spokesman for the clean said half of the plastic found in their most recent clean was unrecognisable from its original state as it was likely decades old.

He added the rest of the litter included lolly sticks, wrappers, cups and bottle lids, and other unidentifiable items washed up on shore.

He said: 'We also came across a few quirky finds, some of which make a regular appearance such as socks and flip flops.

'We also found a fisherman's knife, a cutlery knife, a screwdriver and some loose oranges and carrots.'

All of Adnam's beach cleans provide data to the Marine Conservation Society who hold statistics on beach litter levels across the UK.

The next Adnam's beach clean will be on Saturday, September 15 and will be part of the Marine Conservation Societies Great British Beach Clean weekend.

The spokesman added: 'We'd like to say a big 'thank you' to the 48 adults and 13 children who came along, as well as their furry companions.

'We are very grateful for seeing so many volunteers; locals and not-so-locals, old and young, new comers and veterans, all helping us to protect our beaches and the accompanying marine wildlife.'
