Alternative solution to signs

I DON'T think that putting up signs telling drivers to "merge in turn" on the approach to the bascule bridge, in Lowestoft, will have any effect other than generate income from fines that could be imposed on those who don't.

How many officials might be required to enforce these rules? Are they another non-job Labour-creation to boost Gordon Brown's efforts to win the next election?

Why not do something sensible like putting a set of twin lights each side of the two lanes alternating red and green allowing a quantity of vehicles through from each lane respectively.

Try it out with some temporary units and monitor the results. If they are good then make them permanent.
