THERE were 19 arrests during the police operation at the East Anglian derby at Portman Road last night (Thursday).

A further 13 people were ejected from the ground before and during the game which saw Ipswich beaten 5-1 by arch rivals Norwich.

Two Section 27 notices were also issued requiring individuals to leave the town centre of Ipswich.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said: “Although it was a busy afternoon and evening, there were no major flash points.”

He added that there was some “alcohol-related disorder” but there was no “major disruption and fans were kept separate.”

Despite the arrests, Inspector Matthew Rose hailed the police operation as a great success.

He said: “From my point of view the operation has been an absolute success.

“We have had no serious disorder and the vast majority of people have been able to have a good evening out and we have ensured their safety.

“The policing of the game has been a complete success.”
