ON a very eccentric mission, author and broadcaster Chris Foote-Wood will be at Lowestoft and Southwold today.

The brother of comedian Victoria Wood is part way through a tour of British seaside resorts in a quest to visit all 55 piers in Britain by the end of the year.

And in what he described as “a super wheeze” he is inviting everyone who loves piers as much as he does to join in what he is calling “The Great British Piercrawl 2008”.

Mr Foote-Wood is the author of two books on piers and was inspired to establish the event after visiting all the piers around Britain's coastline last year whilst doing research for his latest book.

Called “Walking over the Waves - Quintessential British Seaside Pier,” it is a comprehensive guide to all existing UK seaside piers.

Today Mr Foote-Wood will be visiting Great Yarmouth's Wellington Pier at 10am and then the Britannia Pier at 10.30am. He will then go on to Lowestoft visiting the South Pier at 11.30am and the Claremont Pier at midday.

His final stop will be Southwold Pier where he will be giving a pier talk at 2pm.
