SO the bascule bridge is going to have to be raised for a further batch of 37 overnight closures.

Interestingly but unsurprisingly, our MP Bob Blizzard, yet again sees fit to seize the opportunity to criticise others for the closures, saying he “was appalled by the news”.

He then rails on Suffolk County Council for not seeking a third crossing.

I accept that the majority of Lowestoft residents and road users will find Mr Blizzard's campaign for a third crossing laudable, but let's consider the facts.

His government have been in power now for 11 years. Yet in 2001, they de-trunked the northern section of the A12 passing control to local authorities who were never going to have the funding or resources available to ensure proper upgrading, let alone a massive overhaul like introducing a third crossing in Lowestoft.

What support has this Labour government given this region while it has seen huge expansion in housing and a rise in population? An appropriate investment in our rail and road infrastructure? Sadly, no.

All our MP can do is to try and pass the blame to other agencies and gives Roger Chenery, who has the onerous task of overseeing the bridge improvements, and Guy McGregor, who has responsibility for Suffolk County Council roads and transport, a hard time for not sorting the bascule bridge problem sooner. What hypocrisy.

Let's see a bit more support for these agencies who are working for our own good, more lobbying of central government, and less party political sniping that has become too prevalent in recent years.
