Pupils celebrated the completion of a town-wide walking challenge.

The Beat the Street competition ran during the summer this year and saw children tasked with walking, cycling or running to school to win points and prizes.

A distance of 150,000 miles was completed by the nearly 13,000 people who took part, helping to release £3,000 donated by Lowestoft Rising to local good causes.

Pakefield Primary School was the overall winner with more than 363,000 points and a total of 19,550 miles.

As well as a trophy, the school received £500 and another £500 for its chosen charity, the British Heart Foundation.

Corton Primary School won the average points leaderboard with 1,471 per pupil – more than double the next competitor.

Michelle Ayers, a teacher from Corton Primary School, said: 'It was great to hear the enthusiasm of our children and their families going out and about on foot and bike to find the beat boxes and explore new places.

'As a result of Beat the Street the level of physical activity increased dramatically with many of our families.'

Phil Aves, from Lowestoft Rising, said: 'Congratulations to everyone who walked, cycled and ran in the Beat the Street competition and well done to Corton Primary School who received their trophy and prizes this week.

'We'd like to thank everyone who helped us walk as far as possible.

'It has been a very successful initiative with thousands of people taking part across the area and would love you to keep up the good work by continuing to ditch the car and to carry on adopting active lifestyles.'
