THE Seagull Theatre, in Pakefield, is joining a global movement to stop violence against women through a benefit production of the Vagina Monologues.

V-Day helps to raise funds and awareness of physical abuse through Eve Ensler's award-winning play and John Hales, theatre manager, has secured the rights for its performance at the venue between April 30 and May 2.

Mr Hales is planning to donate some of the proceeds from the show to a Lowestoft women's refuge to help the nationwide campaign.

The Vagina Monologues began in the basement of Cornelia Street Café, in New York. Five years later it made its way to Madison Square Gardens with an all-star cast, including Jane Fonda and Oprah Winfrey.

Since then young women all over the world have performed the monologues as part of the V-Day campaign and what started as a play has become an international phenomenon.

The play will be produced by Annie Marler and directed by Mr Hales, who said: “The Seagull is a community venue and, while it's important we secure the future of the theatre, it's also important that we give a bit back to the community that we're a part of.

“Our performances are in association with the V Day charity, which works to help women across the world, who are the victims of violence and abuse. We're looking forward to sell out shows that will help us donate some much needed cash to women's charities in Lowestoft.”

Tickets for the production are £8 from the box office on 01502 589726. For more information go to www.vday.org
