BENJAMIN Britten High School came out victorious in a two-day Olympiad held at the University of East Anglia, in Norwich.

Students from the school, in Lowestoft, were asked to investigate the causes of food poisoning at a barbecue and others had to identify unknown water samples after they had been mixed up. They were also treated to a demonstration lecture by Dr Bryson Gore called Rates of Reaction - Turning a Whizz into a Bang. Tim Prior and Joel Able were awarded the bronze medal in the year nine competition.

As part of the event students entered the online quiz Top Class where they had been competing for a place in the grand final. Beating Hobart High School and Hethersett High School set them up to face Cromer High in the final. The evening saw the two teams involved in a number of obscure experiments ranging from chemistry in a shopping basket to making a beam balance. The Benjamin Britten team proved victorious claiming gold medals and a cup.

Meanwhile, another group of students from the school are on a trip to Tanzania.

With two teachers and an expedition leader from Outlook Expeditions, the 10 students will be spending time in Dar es Salaam, Arusha.

They will spend two days with the Maasai community, a rural village close to Mount Meru to help complete the building of a kindergarten school and working with the children in the village.

They will also be visiting Usambara Mountains where they will complete a four-day expedition in the rainforest for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, and a three-day safari in the Mikumi National Park.
