Bloom contest gets underway in Lowestoft

Green-fingered enthusiasts are being urged to take part in an annual competition where displays of colourful flowers will soon be blossoming.
Organisers of the Lowestoft in Bloom competition, who recently launched this year’s event in Kensington Gardens, are asking the people of Lowestoft to enter their gardens in a bid to win the title of best coastal town in the region.
Several of the committee and children dressed up to mark this year’s theme, Alice in Wonderland, and they were not put off by the foggy weather as they came out in force to promote the theme.
Chairman of Waveney District Council, Peter Collecott, also attended, as did members of the B&B drama group and residents of Carlton Hall.
The competition is in its 19th year and the organisers are confident of doubling their entries this time around with more support required.
Lowestoft in Bloom spokesman David Banks, 64, is hoping that many more gardeners will enter this time around.
“The committee wants to show the Anglia in Bloom judges what a high standard Lowestoft gardeners have to offer,” he said.
“This year’s theme for the scarecrows is Alice in Wonderland. We are hoping, like last year, that the schools and care homes will enter because the standard last year was incredible.
“People are often too shy to enter - they think they are not good enough. Everyone should enter.
“It’s free and every application improves Lowestoft’s chances of winning Anglia in Bloom.”
Lowestoft in Bloom is a registered charity and is run by a small committee of dedicated members who all give their time freely and without reward. The charity has also received packets of wildflower seeds from the ‘Grow Wild’ campaign, which it will be distributing to community groups in the area. This donation is part of a dynamic £10.5million programme to bring people and communities together to sow, grow and support UK native wild flowers.
In addition, the committee has confirmed that this year’s AGM will take place at 7pm on Friday, May 15 at the Town Hall in Lowestoft.
