The speaker for the evening was Jenny Tyson on Japanese Gardens. Mrs Tyson's daughter lived in Japan for several years and her mother greatly enjoyed her visits to that country. The highlight of these visits was to various gardens; these gardens are very much appreciated, as open spaces are rare in cities. The gardens are places to be quiet and for meditation they are thought to be homes for the spirits. Rice ropes surround some trees; these are considered to be sacred. Spring comes suddenly and it is cherry blossom time, time to celebrate with a picnic. The whole family enjoys the outing with one member arriving early to secure a good site. Heralding the arrival of spring the cherry trees bloom over a period of weeks from the south to the north of the country. Mrs Tyson's talk was illustrated with some beautiful slides and she was thanked by Rosemarie Page.
