A group, which oversees a popular wildlife haven, has been honoured with a special award.

Volunteers from the Bonds Meadow Community Association – which oversees the seven acres of meadow, wood and marsh situated in Oulton – expressed delight at receiving a Good Egg Award from Radio Suffolk.

With Radio Suffolk’s Guy Campbell recently visiting Bonds Meadow to meet the work party, he was surprised by this “hidden gem.” Bonds Meadow project manager Peter Aldous and committee member Allyson Barron showed him the community orchard, an area of wild fruit trees which are now flourishing on previously neglected ground. About 25 per cent of the total area, which was previously a dump, is now a network of woodland pathways that are being well used and loved by the public.

A group spokesman said: “This could not have happened without our hardworking and dedicated volunteers who said they come for companionship, the satisfaction of doing a good job and to get fit.”

The group welcomes new volunteers so if you would like fresh air and exercise in beautiful surroundings, join the work party, which meets every Tuesday morning at 9.30am at the Sands Lane entrance or call 01502 514157 for further details.
