A COMEDY evening, band rehearsals and a series of meetings are helping to keep a community theatre in Pakefield operational.
And other events are waiting in the wings to take place at the Seagull Theatre, in Morton Road.
It comes after a series of open days at the building in Morton Road, headed up by Helen McDermott, the chairman of the theatre's advisory group, which was set up to secure the future of the complex.
She met up with individuals and organisations last month who are keen to use the Seagull, which had to close after funding from Suffolk County Council was withdrawn.
Positive Futures junk band are booked in for the next six weeks. It is a version of a wheelie bin drumming project with tutor George Fothergill, who coached Whitton youngsters performing in First Flight, which was staged at the Seagull in the autumn last year.
With funding from Waveney District Council, Suffolk Artlink is paying for Mr Fothergill's time once a week over the summer term.
The project finishes when the young people, who are excluded from school, perform at Latitude over the four days of the festival next month.
On Thursday next week Street Level, the film team who have been based at the theatre over the past few weeks will be presenting their work. It starts at 7.30pm.
The following day Waveney MP Bob Blizzard will be talking about the My Place project for young people, and the comedy evening is being staged on July 12.
Other bookings are pending and will be announced over the coming weeks.
Ms McDermott said: “It's a really positive message that's coming out of the Seagull at the moment and we are so pleased that we have been able to secure bookings.”
The first Pakefield summer fete is on Sunday on the green between the Jolly Sailors and the Trowel and Hammer. Ms McDermott and Mr Blizzard will be there from 2pm and are keen to meet anyone interested staging events at the Seagull or booking space.
