A brand new festival will hit Lowestoft next week – bringing three days of music, theatre, art, dance and literature to the town.

Brazilian beats, puppet making, rap workshops, street dance and storytelling are among a raft of activities planned for half term as a children's arts festival takes centre stage.

The Lowestoft Flipside Festival runs next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, October 24 to October 26 – with events at the Marina Theatre and Lowestoft Library, as well as 'an intriguing' rainforest installation in the town centre on London Road North.

Festival organisers are promising 'a brand spanking new festival for children, young people and their grown-ups' that will feature 'three vibrant and jam-packed days' of music, theatre, art, dance and literature.

With a touch of Brazil hitting town, the festival is being delivered by Suffolk arts charity Flipside in partnership with Lowestoft Rising and the Lowestoft Cultural Education Partnership (CEP). The CEP brings arts and cultural organisations together with local authorities and schools to improve cultural education for young people.

A spokesman for the festival organisers said: 'Try Capoeria – a form of Brazilian Street Dance, enjoy a puppet show, make a Brazilian headdress, or an instrument from recycled material, take part in Drama in a Day, listen to a well-known author, join a poetry slam or simply relax to the Bossa Nova rhythms.'

With graffiti art workshops, creating superheroes, musical theatre singing workshops and body percussions workshops, there is something for everyone planned. There will also be three author events happening in the library – The Queen's Knickers with Nicholas Allan at 11am on Tuesday, as the award-winning author hosts a fun workshop in which everyone wins prizes. At 11am next Wednesday, Talking Dogs, will see author India Knight (The Goodness of Dogs) and Lowestoft poet Dean Parkin (The Bubble Wrap & Other Poems) in a celebration of happy dogs and the happy people who own them. On Thursday, at 11am, M.G. Leonard – author of Beetle Boy and Beetle Queen – will display her Australian Rainbow Stag Beetles.

Schools across Lowestoft have been working with the Flipside charity as part of the festival, with the Green Alphabet Project encouraging youngsters to think about the environment and sustainability as part of a scheme that will see children's artwork and poems displays in the library during the festival.
