The moment a driver crashed into a garden wall in Lowestoft 'sounded like a bomb went off' according to a local resident.

Ronnie McCrae's windows were smashed and ornamental glassware destroyed after the accident at the front of his home in Royal Avenue.

Police said a woman was reported for dangerous driving after the incident.

The woman, driving a VW Polo, smashed into the wall just after midnight on Sunday, before being taken to hospital by the ambulance service.

A rapid response vehicle and ambulance crew were dispatched to the incident.

The crew treated the woman for leg and abdominal pain, before taking her to James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston for further care.

Mr McCrae, 70, a resident at Avenue Mansions, said that police told him he was lucky to be alive after narrowly avoiding being hit by flying bricks.

He said: 'The police said I was extremely lucky. I had got up to make a cup of coffee and then it just sounded like a bomb went off. I walked back into the lounge and it was a terrible mess.

'The bricks had flown everywhere and went through the window. They told me if I had been sat by the window I would not have been here now.'

He added: 'I was very lucky and the car was mounted over the wall. I have never seen anything like it before.

'My neighbours all helped me clear up on Monday, I lost all my ornaments – including some sentimental glassware – it was in a terrible state.

'The bricks at the wall at the front flew a long way and ended up at the back of the lounge which is about 28ft long.

'You couldn't see the car park for red brick dust and the glass was all shattered all over where I was sitting.'

Mr Deacon said he initially thought he had been targeted by vandals throwing bricks at his house, and went out to confront them.

That was the moment he saw the woman was injured.

He said: 'I got her a duvet and a pillow and made her comfortable before calling the police.'

The woman's condition was not believed to be life-threatening.
