I'M really pleased to see that Waveney MP Bob Blizzard has got involved in the 'merge in turn' issues on the approach to the bascule bridge, in Lowestoft, a that he organised a site meeting with officials.

I can't help wondering what time the visit was and which direction they came from?

I, and hundreds of other motorists, will have experienced the journey south from about 10am until "lane changeover time" which can take over 30 minutes with tailbacks stretching along Battery Green up to the roundabout at the top of Artillery Way.

While on the other side of the river the northbound traffic, that enjoys both lanes being open at that time, usually consists of perhaps a lone car, the occasional bicycle and maybe even a bus.

I wondered if anyone monitored the traffic flow via CCTV and if so are they empowered with the common sense to initiate "lane changeover" to mitigate the snaking southbound traffic queue?

I'm sure we can apportion part of the reason on people flocking to our great town to enjoy its location and charm. Shame they won't be back in a hurry as it was too painful for them to move freely around. Or maybe the officials came down Katwijk Way, then sat near the front of the queue, turning their engine off, watching the comedy that is the sequence of unsynchronized traffic lights that allows three cars to turn left before changing then allow traffic from Denmark Road to block the junction. Even worse, should the unsuspecting pedestrians wish to cross to reach the other side it can be several traffic light sequences before any movement by anyone can be felt again.

My point is this, proper signs will no doubt benefit traffic flow but those benefits will be very limited unless they are part of a full package of evaluation and reform, considering all contributing factors.

Do the people who planned, designed, developed, tested, built and maintained the new network of roads that converge at the bridge actually live here or are they away making some other town a misery to live in?
