A LOWESTOFT-based entrepreneur is hoping flags will be flying all over the country later this summer to celebrate the Olympic Games coming to London in 2012.

On August 24 the official handover of the games from China to the United Kingdom takes place as Beijing 2008 passes the Olympic Flag to London 2012.

Between 3.30pm and 5.30pm flags will fly along The Mall, in London, setting off a chain of flags being raised in towns and cities across the country to mark the UK being the next host for the summer Olympic Games.

The flag flying ceremonies are being organised by Bruno Peek, from Carlton Colville, who is no stranger to arranging national events having been behind the celebrations for the Queen's Golden Jubilee and the St George's Day commemorations.

“It will be the first time in the history of the Olympic Games that an activity of this nature, involving the whole of a country, has ever taken place,” said Mr Peek.

He hopes that his home town will become involved in the national celebrations.

“We are looking forward to the involvement of Lowestoft in this unique event, especially as we are the most easterly town in England,” said Mr Peek.

The flag representing the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will be sent to all borough, district, city and county councils in the UK who apply.

To get a flag a local authority has to nominate a person to lead the project and register before August 8, 2008.
