CYCLISTS will be able to join pedestrians on Lowestoft seafront for the first time this summer.

In January last year, Waveney District Council approved a change in bylaws to allow cycling along the resort's promenade.

Now the change is due to come into force, meaning that cycling will be permitted on the upper promenade between the Claremont Pier and the Cefas laboratories from June 1.

The seafront is already a popular alternative route for cyclists wanting to avoid the congestion on London Road South and now the new bylaws will set aside a section of the wide promenade specifically for bikes.

A spokesman for Waveney District Council said that the section for cyclists will be clearly signed. She said: 'The new bylaws have now been approved and will be implemented in June 1. From this date, cyclists will be able to use the upper prom in the region of the Claremont Pier to Cefas and appropriate signage will also be in place.

'In creating the new bylaws, Waveney District Council is balancing the interests of both cyclists and pedestrians. We want to make sure that everyone can enjoy the seafront safely and these new measures will be a real improvement.

'Cyclists can use the new route from June and Suffolk police will ensure that the system is followed for the safety and enjoyment of all.'
