A provider responsible for two Waveney elderly care facilities has been told by a watchdog both are inadequate and remain in special measures.

Lound Hall in Lound and Manor Farm Care Home in Kessingland are run by KRG Care Homes Limited, a private provider registered in Harrow, and both recently received Care Quality Commission inspections.

Both were visited in autumn, with recently-published reports revealing both had been judged as inadequate overall, with inspectors raising severe concerns over the way they are run.

The homes - which at the time of the inspections catered to a combined 57 people - received criticism across the five areas of safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness and leadership.

Manor Farm was rated as inadequate in the safety and leadership of its services, while told it required improvement in the remaining three categories, while Lound Hall was judged as inadequate in four out of five areas.

Lound Hall was told it did not have enough staff to meet the needs of those using its services and that it had taken no action to reduce the risk of its residents becoming malnourished.

Its report said: 'There were limited care plans available to guide staff on how to meet people's needs. For some people, there were no care plans at all and there was confusion from staff about what people's needs were and how they should be met.

'We observed that some people were socially isolated and disengaged from their surroundings. People who were nursed in bed had little access to engagement or activity.'

In the report on Manor Farm, the care plans were described as 'generic and not person centred'.

It said: 'People were put at the risk of significant harm in the absence of clear records and assessments, which reflected all current areas of risk and how these should be managed to protect the person from harm.

'Care planning did not include enough information about people's past lives and experiences for staff to understand them.'

Manor Farm was visited on September 5, with Lound Hall inspected on October 31, with results published in December.

Provider's statement

A spokesman for KRG Care Homes has said they are disappointed by the reports.

They said: 'We have been working closely with the CQC and other stakeholders since the inspection and are a considerable way through a review into operating policies and are working extremely hard to make the necessary improvements.

'We would emphasise that our care remains at the core of what we do and that changes are being introduced to ensure the quality of care develops to ensure our residents's needs are met.

'We wish to reassure the residents and their families that we are taking this report very seriously.

'We appointed a new management team at Manor Farm in August 2017 who have worked extremely hard to completely turn it around and enhance the life of our residents.

'Significant improvements have been made at both homes since their respective inspections and we have set our teams in both homes on a journey to excellence.'
