A NEW Journal Carnival Queen will be chosen this evening at Lowestoft's Marina Theatre.

Our outgoing queen Emma Cooper will be part of the judging panel and will present her successor with the crown.

Two attendants will also be picked to accompany the winner at various engagements throughout the coming year.

There are 24 finalists taking part tonight and the chosen girl will benefit from thousands of pounds in prizes.

These include a holiday at Parc Asterix, near Paris, courtesy of Pleasurewood Hills, £300 of vouchers to spend at di-lusso, in London Road South, a free modelling portfolio taken by Picture Studios, in London Road North, and a bespoke piece of jewellery made by www.beadelicious-online.co.uk tailored to her taste to wear during the carnival parade on August 10.

Boots will give away £100 of No 7 Protect and Perfect products, while Clinique at Boots, who are doing the make up this evening, will give all three girls a free makeover using Clinique products.

Other prizes for all three include cash prizes from The Journal; vouchers to spend at Match Clothing and Chadds; gym memberships from Nirvana Health and Leisure; and a pampering day courtesy of the Beauty Lounge, in Suffolk Road, on the day of the carnival, as well as a Guinot selection box for the queen.

All profits from tonight will go to the James Paget Palliative Care Unit and the entertainment will be provided by singer Kerry Kennedy, who performs anything from Duffy to Dusty Springfield.

Tickets, priced at £5, are still available from the Marina box office by calling 01502 533200. Everyone who buys a ticket will be entitled to exchange it after the evening for a free portrait sitting at Picture Studios, worth £11.95.

See next week's Journal to meet the town's new female ambassador.
