THE trust behind keeping the Lowestoft Excelsior trawler at sea is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a programme of events the town can get involved with.

The ship, which is 105f long, 86 years old and made from 100 tons of oak, was rescued from a watery grave early in the 1980s by Lowestoft architect John Wylson and ultimately he, Lord Somerleyton, and others, formed the Trust to restore and get her sailing for the community.

Today she carries hundreds of young people, some disadvantaged, as well as Trust supporters.

This year three major events are being held to celebrate the birthday milestone with the importance of the trust and the ship noted by many, including world sailor Sir Robin Knox Johnston who, with colleagues, hopes to mark the year for the trust.

He said: “The importance of sailing, whether it be round the world or along England's coasts, is paramount. The experience delivers much for many, including disadvantaged and deprived people as well as adventurers. We all wish Excelsior longevity and continued safe sailing.”

The programme of events begins with a social evening on Friday, July 4, from 7pm, where the Excelsior will be moored at the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club.

She will take a cruise between September 3 and 7 where small boats, sailing or motor, will accompany her from Lowestoft to Ipswich as part of four days of celebrations. This event will also include two evening events in Lowestoft.

The highlight of the year is set to be the anniversary dinner and celebration on Friday, November 14, at the Assembly House in Norwich.

Everyone is welcome to the event on July 4 on board the vessel which includes a supper. Telephone trustee Paul Thomas, on 01603 738582 or email paul@paulgwynthomas.co.uk
