“We have gone and done it” - that was what the Lowestoft in Bloom committee said after securing a regional gold award for the first time in 19 years.
Green-fingered heroes from across the area were praised at this year’s Anglia in Bloom awards.
Kensington Gardens in Lowestoft triumphed in the best small park category, while Lowestoft received the gold award in the coastal town up to 35,000 residents category.
Judges praised the town’s “promotion of local heritage”, “community participation” and involvement of schools.
There was also success for Blundeston, as the village won a silver gilt award, while in Halesworth organisers celebrated after winning the award for best small town.
The awards were held at Wodson Park Sports Centre, in Hertfordshire, on Thursday, September 17.
Lowestoft in Bloom spokesman David Banks said: “It is the first time in our 19-year history that the town has won the coveted gold award and obviously we are over the moon,” he said.
“So much hard work has gone into this year’s entry. The committee has worked tirelessly in organising the projects.
“The judges were really impressed with this year’s entry, especially the variety and diversity of the entries.”
Mr Banks also paid tribute to founder member of Lowestoft in Bloom Derek Gower, who died recently. “Derek served as chairman for many years but failing health finally making it necessary for him to relinquish that position,” Mr Banks said.
“Derek continued to serve as a committee member until the summer of 2014 and was passionate about his home town and this was demonstrated by his service as councillor on Lowestoft Borough Council and Waveney District Council.”
Robert Le Rougetel, from Halesworth in Bloom, said: “To win such an award so soon after coming in to existence three years ago is a remarkable achievement.
“The splendid new town signs and planters at the major entrances to the town have been designed and executed on the initiative of Halesworth in Bloom.”
The Lowestoft in Bloom awards ceremony will take place on Friday, October 23 at the Baptist Church in Hollingsworth Road, Lowestoft.
