Chef jailed for vandalising Jay Kay's Ferrari

A chef who vandalised pop star Jay Kay's �1m Ferrari Enzo, after seeing a woman he had and 'emotional attachment' to go to the star's bedroom, has been jailed for 20 weeks.

Aaron Billington, 21, was jailed at Ipswich Crown Court after admitting damaging the singer's sports car as it was parked outside the Brudenell Hotel, in Aldeburgh, Suffolk.

The court heard Billington might also have been angry at being 'mocked' for his stutter.

Christopher Morgan, mitigating, said Billington inflicted nearly �10,000 of damage to the vehicle after seeing the girl go to the star's hotel room.

Billington, who admitted criminal damage as well as failing to answer bail and leaving bed and breakfast accommodation and an Indian restaurant without paying, was jailed for a total of 20 weeks.

Billington used to work and live at the hotel, but is now of no fixed abode.

The court was told Billington saw Jay Kay and a man called Charlie walking along the beach with two women at about 12.45am on March 3.

Billington started to become 'arrogant' towards the star, who 'didn't really' want to speak to him, and the 'mocking' began shortly after, Mr Morgan said.

'No one has explained what the mocking was,' he said. 'I put it very simply. Firstly, Mr Billington had an emotional attachment to one of the young ladies in the company of Charlie and Jay Kay. That is perhaps unknown to Jay Kay at the time.

'There's one significant factor that explains why the defendant was being mocked - and that's his stutter.'

Shortly after, Jay Kay invited the two women to his room, Mr Morgan said. 'It was easy to draw the obvious conclusion what was going on at the time.'

Witnesses then saw Billington vandalising the car by pelting it with stones.

The court heard the total amount of damage had been revised from an initial estimate of �30,000 to �9,434.03. This included �2,500 to replace the windscreen, �700 to replace the driver's side window and �3,500 to polish the paintwork and valet the car.

Jay Kay, whose insurance excess was �10,000, also had to pay �370 to have the vehicle towed away.

The court heard Billington admitted the criminal damage at Lowestoft Magistrates' Court last month.

He then committed further offences of leaving two sets of bed and breakfast accommodation and an Indian restaurant without paying. He also failed to answer bail on time.

He admitted the offences on April 1 after turning himself in to police.

Naomi Turner, prosecuting, said Jay Kay intended to give any compensation granted by the court to charity.

"He hasn't made a victim personal statement but said if compensation was ordered, he doesn't want to claim it himself but would donate it to charity,' she said.

Sentencing Billington to 20 weeks in custody, Judge David Goodin said: 'This was a spiteful offence.'
