Child protection

THE terrible murder, killing and injuries inflicted on children seems to go on and on and on all over the world.

Here in the UK we have various agencies which are supposed to protect children but sadly they don't always work, until it is too late.

THE terrible murder, killing and injuries inflicted on children seems to go on and on and on all over the world.

Here in the UK we have various agencies which are supposed to protect children but sadly they don't always work, until it is too late.

I thought I would write to you about the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. This was the first draft by Eglantyne Jebb, a very caring woman, February 23, 1923, and is as follows.

1 The child must be given the means requisite for its normal development, both materially and spiritually.

2 The child that is hungry must be fed, the child that is sick must be nursed, the child that is backward must be helped, the delinquent child must be reclaimed and the orphan and waif must be sheltered and succoured.

3 The child must be the first to receive relief in times of distress.

4 The child must be put in a position to earn a livelihood and must be protected against every form of exploitation.

5 The child must be brought up in the consciousness that its talents must be devoted to the service of its fellow men.

These rights have been modified and expanded over the years but they are still about the rights of a child.

I have spent much of my working life with children and young people since 1961, now retired, but I still hear the same story when a child is harmed.

“It must never happen again.” But it does. Why?
