I AM pleased that cycling is to be allowed on the seafront promenade but something still needs to be done to make the Station Square/Denmark Road/ Katwyck Way locality more cycling friendly.

Railwatch, the magazine of the rail users campaign group, Railfuture, reports on a new hybrid train operating in France. It can operate on both electrified and non-electrified lines.
In 2008 the Government will award contracts for new inter-city trains including a hybrid electric-diesel train.
Lowestoft to London Liverpool Street is quoted as one of the services that could get them. It could speed up the service slightly and help at times of operational difficulties.
The main point, however, is surely how positive that both Lowestoft, in rail terms often described as "at the end of a branch line", and its rail line, often written off, could both be one of the firsts to be served by a new 21st century train. It all adds to the argument for supporting the upgrading of the Ipswich line.
The combination of more cycling and possibly improved rail services makes me feel optimistic for Lowestoft.
