The parents of a young boy who was involved in a collision with a car on a busy Lowestoft road have backed a community petition calling for safety improvements.

Callum Miller – who was six last Friday – is now back at home and recovering from his ordeal after suffering head injuries in the collision, which happened on the junction of Water Lane and Church Road on Wednesday, June 24.

That evening, Callum's aunt Kara Smith shared a message on social media stating: 'Something needs to be done about parking outside schools.'

An online petition was set up on the website change.org by Doyle and Natasha Woodger the following evening and calls on Suffolk County Council to install speed bumps in Church Road and to consider turning it into a 20mph zone.

There are also calls for a new crossing patrol assistant and a new crossing.

Since the online petition was established by the parents and community of St Margaret's Primary School and surrounding areas, 600 people have signed it in a week.

Mr and Mrs Woodger, of Viburnum Green – whose children attend St Margaret's – said: 'Church Road has a number of dangerous blind bends that cars tend to ignore and drive dangerously.

'We as parents and the community would like to see some changes put in place for the safety of all, and to help prevent this from happening again.'

Parents concerned with the current situation said that between 8.45am and 9.30am and 2.30pm to 3.30pm the road gets 'worse and worse'.

Problems are also heightened by vehicles double parking on either side of Church Road.

With a large number of children and adults using the road each morning and afternoon, Mrs Woodger, of Viburnum Green, said it is a 'terrible' situation. 'This should not have happened,' she said.

'Within this area there are three schools, a park, a sports centre and a college.

'It needs a little crossing or another crossing patrol person. It is not safe – you can't fit the whole school onto two islands,' she added.

'We need these changes to be made sooner rather than later, and to be kept permanently, to keep our community safe.'

Callum's father Sean Miller, 27, said: 'We can't praise the community enough – everyone has rallied round.'

Mum Jody Mills, 26, added: 'I have always said that there needs to be a crossing patrol assistant outside St Margaret's Primary.

'If something isn't done then I'm sure my son won't be the last child that this happens to.

'I'm just glad he is alive as most drivers speed down that road all the time.'
