THE collapse of composting company Bioganix will not effect the collection of kerbside compost, officials said today.

Suffolk County Council has reacted to the situation and prides itself on its recycling results and the fantastic support it gets from the public.

The collection of food and green waste is an important aspect of the county's recycling success. Compostable materials are picked up from the kerbside to be composted and therefore diverted from landfill.

Bioganix, the company that processed the material collected by Suffolk Coastal and Waveney District Councils, has just gone into administration, so Suffolk County Council has been working with the district councils to secure an alternative solution. The food and green waste collected from the kerbside in Waveney and Suffolk Coastal will now be processed by Countrystyle Recycling Group.

Councillor Eddy Alcock, portfolio holder for environment and waste, said: "Thanks to the swift action of the local authorities working together to provide an alternative solution, the collection and processing of food and green waste has continued. We are able to continue composting and I can assure everyone that none of this material has ended up in landfill.

"Recycling makes a vital contribution to tackling climate change and our ambition to make Suffolk the greenest county. Residents' efforts have significantly reduced the amount of waste that is landfilled in Suffolk by more than 6pc compared with last year. It is vital that we do not stop our valuable work now."
