I HAVE to admit to some confusion about Rachel Moore's views about SATs.

In her column (May 2) she was complaining about the lack of accountability for teachers but now condemns one of the Government's major measures for assessing pupil progress and the associated quality of teaching.

I assume her opinions (May 16) were coloured by the recent unsurprising revelations that children are increasingly "taught to the test."

The NUT supports the principle that children should be assessed for progress against National Curriculum levels when their teachers make their professional judgement that they are ready.
