Parish council - A meeting of Corton Parish Council followed the annual parish meeting on May 5. Chairman David Butcher and vice-chairman John Burford were re-appointed to serve for another year and Joan Baxter was re-appointed as parish council representative to the village hall management committee, Joan Baxter and Dr Steven Taylor to the Poor's Land Trust, David Butcher to the playing field committee and former clerk Lynne Pavey to the school's board of governors.

Mr Butcher reported that Waveney play officer Simon Walker had asked a play equipment supplier to provide an affordable scheme for children in the four to nine years age range at the western end of the Pit.

There had as yet been no negotiation with Suffolk CC regarding the possible sale of the village hall, but the county had made known its intention to give 21 days advance notice of an application for planning permission. Michael Soanes was investigating whether the hall was an exempt or non-exempt charity. The former would give village negotiators a freer hand, the latter would involve the Charity Commission to a greater extent.

Regarding the parish plan, Mr Butcher confirmed that he would analyse the responses to the questionnaire, present them in the proper format to parish council members and provide a summary for Coastline magazine.

It was announced that the official date for the closure of the naturist beach was November 1 2009, and that Waveney would post notices to that effect well in advance. It was agree to consult SALC (Suffolk Association of Local Councils) as to whether the insurance for the village event would best be taken out in the name of the playing field, the parish council or named organisers. Heather Habbin said that a meeting would be held in the pavilion on June 3, at 7pm for all those involved in the event and anyone else willing to help.

The chairman reported on the last northern parishes meeting, which had been held at Corton. The main event of the evening had been a presentation to PC Boggis and his wife to mark his retirement. PC Stranks was introduced as the officer who would take over duties in the northern area. Mr Butcher had reported the loss of beach to the north of the village as an area of present and future concern.

In the police report for April, PC Stranks wrote that there had been one theft and three incidents of criminal damage of which two were to vehicles and one to a building.

It was reported that Michael Soanes would attend the next meeting of the village hall committee to discuss with the trustees details of the terms and conditions of the Colman bequest.

For the Poor's Land Trust Mrs Baxter reported that there was one vacancy at the St Bartholomew's Court complex.

It was agreed to make a 400 grant this year for the maintenance of the churchyard, which was also the village burial ground, and also for the maintenance of the playing field.

The meeting finished with a letter from a resident of Mill Lane expressing concern at potential traffic problems arising from the expansion of the school.
