Corton Primary School pupils’ business venture hailed a success

Enterprising youngsters at a Lowestoft-area primary school planted herbs, designed cards and made cakes as part of an “exciting” business venture.
WHAT THEY SAID
A Corton Primary School spokesman said: “The enterprise café has been an exciting venture for the children at Corton Primary. “Throughout the project, parents have been actively involved and have provided a great support for the children. A huge learning curve has been undertaken for our young entrepreneurs as they have had to rethink their orders and design ideas to suit their prospective customers.”
Julie-Ann Gage, Lounge Host for Virgin Money, said: “Their entrepreneurial skills were amazing. One pupil came running up to me and said ‘this is the best day ever.’ They sold sweets, cakes, homemade cards, clay models, gingerbread men, herbs they’d grown at home were sold in bags with their logo on.”
Children at Corton Church of England Primary School were tasked with making £5 grow – and came up with a number of different money-making schemes that were showcased at an enterprise café.
The scheme, as part of Virgin Money’s Make £5 Grow initiative, saw pupils at the school in The Street, Corton given the money and then challenged make a profit by setting up mini businesses to create products or services.
It was designed to encourage school children to develop important entrepreneurial talents and help equip them with basic skills for later life.
Julie-Ann Gage, lounge host for Virgin Money, said: “Virgin Money’s Make £5 Grow scheme is an exciting opportunity which helps pupils to build their enterprise, mathematics, team-building and financial skills while giving them a taste of what its like to be an entrepreneur.
She added: “It was an exciting venture for the children at Corton Primary School.
“As their ambassador, I encouraged them to come up with business ideas which included a process that involved marketing, market research, ordering of resources, making and the final and most exciting part – the grand sale.”
The entrepreneurial youngsters sold their products at a sale in school on June 26.
After advertising their sale with posters that were displayed around the village, parents were also informed and invited to the sale which proved to be a great success – as it was “a complete sell out”, according to organisers.
