From chic cushions, novel hogs and wooden wears to hand-sewn jewellery, books and pickles - the creative talents of a number of local crafters were on display at the latest craft fair at Lowestoft's Kirkley Centre.

A variety of stalls from crafters across Waveney featured at the event on Saturday, with lots of visitors turning out.

Organiser Barbara Larkin, 67, from Oulton Broad, said: “I have been a crafter myself for many years, but this is the first craft fair I have actually organised.

“We are just at the beginning of a new venture, at the moment. But this is nice for the area, and we want this to keep flourishing. We have had a lovely day, with lots of visitors, and thanks go to our great stallholders.”

Organisers of the new venture hope it will continue to flourish over the next three months.

WHAT THEY SAID

Barbara Larkin has run Barbara’s Shabby Chic Cushions for a number of years and spoke about her passion for crafts. She said: “I’ve always sewn, always made things – it has always been a passion of mine. The people here today, other crafters, are all as passionate as me. I love being with like-minded people who love crafting and making things. It is what crafting is all about – people put their heart and soul into it.”

The craft fairs at the Kirkley Centre have been running on the first Saturday of every month. There will be three further craft fairs this year on October 3, November 7 and December 5, with each event running from 10am to 3pm. Mrs Larkin said: “We have two rooms for the fair at the moment, but if we are successful we can extend into the rest of the venue as it can hold up to 24 stalls. We do refreshments, tea and cake stalls and if we’re successful we hopefully can continue it in the New Year.”

Pitch fees from stallholders go back into the Kirkley Centre.

Kareena Chapman, Kirkley Centre manager, said: “This is the third craft fair and it has definitely been the busiest yet. It is lovely to see the fair grow. As people start thinking about Christmas gifts, there are so many lovely, unique gifts available here.”

Stallholder Shirley Mead, who runs hand sewn jewellery and accessories, added: “It has been a very good today. I have taken a number of orders from customers and the premises here are great. It is a fantastic venue.”
