A 27-year-old motorist has been reported 'for careless driving' after a collision with a crossing patrol assistant on a busy Lowestoft road.

Police and the East of England ambulance service were called to Yarmouth Road, close to the junction of Hollingsworth Road and Gunton Church Lane, at 8.20am yesterday (Thursday) following reports of a collision with a 'lollipop man' who is believed to be 'in his 60s.'

The driver of a green Rover stopped after the collision, and called police. A police spokesman said: 'The crossing patrol assistant was in shock and suffered cuts to his head. Some glass had got into the cuts and he was treated at the scene for minor injuries.'

Police confirmed that the 27-year-old driver of the Rover, who was believed to be from Norfolk, had been reported to the Crown Prosecution Service for careless driving.

A Suffolk County Council spokesman confirmed that the crossing patrol assistant had been injured in Lowestoft. 'The man suffered bumps and bruises and is off work today (Friday).'

This busy A12 road, which currently has two crossing patrol assistants ensuring children and parents can safely cross over before and after school, is the same crossing in which six-year-old Samantha Castledine was hit by a lorry and killed on her way to school in March 2007.

A major community campaign, backed by former Waveney MP Bob Blizzard, Samantha's family, and The Journal was launched as improvements were sought for this crossing.

The Highways Agency agreed to make traffic calming improvements, which are now taking place in overnight works.
