Hundreds of cyclists will be chasing the rising sun as they pedal their way from one lifeboat station to another in aid of the life-saving service.

The Chase the Rising Sun sportive will see riders set off from Hunstanton lifeboat station at 9.30pm on Saturday and ride 100 miles to Southwold lifeboat station in time for the sunrise.

They will follow the coast road between the two seaside towns and will refuel at the halfway point at Cromer lifeboat station.

At the finish, the cyclists will be able to enjoy a bacon roll and hot drink while watching the sun come up.

The event, as with all those organised by Cycle Sportives UK this year, will raise funds for a new lifeboat in Wells as part of the Shannon Appeal.

Joint organiser Peter Dennes said: 'We like to listen to what our riders would prefer to see in this region in terms of cycling – and this was one fantastic suggestion that we thought we just have to do.

'Being such a unique event – a night ride – offers some lovely, different, challenges that perhaps you don't get from the standard daytime events; the thrill of setting off at sunset and chasing the sun towards it rising some 100 miles further along the coast, the different sights and smells you can take in on a lovely breathtaking summer's evening along the Norfolk and Suffolk coastline, the friendships you can make by riding in small groups with like- minded people. And, of course, sampling that lovely bacon roll and fresh coffee at the finish watching the sun come up should be a pretty memorable experience we think.

'It's the first of its kind for this region – and the interest has been huge, which speaks volumes in itself – so hopefully we can make this into an annual event for everyone's cycling diary.'

Cycle Sportives UK last year gave more than £1,050 from its events for the East Anglian Air Ambulance, and organisers hope they can boost the fundraising effort this year.

Other events organised by the company include the already sold-out Round Norfolk Epic, which will see cyclists tackle 200 miles in one day.

Chase the Rising Sun entry costs £35 in advance or £45 on the night. All finishers will receive a medal and there will be a bag drop-off service so riders' belongings can be taken from the start to the finish.
