The headteacher of a primary school in Lowestoft has described how she feels "very lucky and privileged to work with a brilliant team of effective teachers" after it maintained its "good" Ofsted status in a recent inspection.

St Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary School, in Kirkley Cliff Road, was inspected by Pete Sewell, lead inspector from Ofsted in March and all five key areas received a ‘good’ rating.

The school was said to have high expectations of staff and pupils, spearheaded by headteacher Veronica Short who was “delighted with the report” and its detailed findings.

Teaching at the school was found to be effective with a range of methods used to engage and motivate pupils. The report also outlined how students behave well, feel safe and have positive attitudes to learning.

The Headteacher and her staff were also praised for providing specialist teaching in subjects such as Music and PE.

Mrs Short said: “I am very happy and it is very much down to the work that goes on between staff, parents and children in what is a real team effort.

“I am delighted for the school and the families as we have very high expectations of our pupils as we believe they can succeed build on their existing skills.”

The school did not receive an “outstanding” rating because the report states that in some lessons there needs to be more challenges for the able students.

It was suggested that the school always provides a high level of challenge in lessons for the most able pupils to make sure they are given the opportunity to develop their writing and mathematical skills in history, geography and science.

The school was also encouraged to improve attendance levels so that it is at least in line with the national average.

Mrs Short added: “We would love to get an outstanding report and we are currently reviewing our timetable.

“With regards to attendance we have implemented changes in January but not had enough time to work them through which could affect the data.”
