A MAJOR alert was sparked after an arrested man was found with part of a suspected incendiary device.

Bomb disposal experts were called to Lowestoft police station after officers searched the man arrested on suspicion of being drunk and verbally abusive on a train.

Suffolk Police were alerted by their colleagues at British Transport Police just before 2.30pm on Thursday and arrested the suspect at Lowestoft railway station.

A police spokesman said: “He was searched and found to be in possession of what appeared to be part of an incendiary device.

“As a precaution this was secured at Lowestoft police station and the bomb disposal squad alerted. They made the device safe, taking it away with them. Arrangements were made for the train to be searched.”

The National Express service had already left Lowestoft and the search took place at Norwich railway station where the all-clear was given.

It is understood the suspicious device was discovered at about 3.30pm on Thursday and that the bomb disposal squad spent several hours at the police station.

A National Express spokesman confirmed no suspicious items were found on the train held at Norwich railway station.

An East Midland Trains service due to set off at 3.52pm on the Norwich/Liverpool line was also delayed because it was blocked in by the service from Lowestoft.

A 43-year-old man was charged on Friday night with possessing an article to cause criminal damage and also a public order offence.

Neil Lewington, of Church End Lane, Tilehurst, Reading, was bailed to appear before Lowestoft Magistrates on November 11.
