A Norwich City dream team under the management of the man who led the Canaries to Victory in the 1985 Milk Cup helped knock a fundraising total for six on Sunday.

The 20/20 Canary Cup at Burnham Market saw City heroes including Bryan Gunn, Phil Hoadley, Dave Bennett and Tony Spearing don their whites and take to the crease under the watchful eye of former Norwich City boss Ken Brown to challenge the village cricket team.

Organisers of the event had hoped to raise 4,000 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and Burnham Market Playgroup but such was the enthusiasm for the game that with the help of sponsorship the total had been smashed even before it began.

Mr Brown, who took great delight in handing out Canaries shirts to his players before the opening over, said it felt good to be in charge of a Norwich City team once again.

He said: 'It is nice to see all the lads. Most of these players are ones who passed through my hands during my time at city.

'Some have put in a big effort to be here, for instance, Tony Spearing was in Paris yesterday and he got back this morning and motored up here.'

With the City side first to bat Bryan Gunn led the way in a pairing up with his former assistant Ian Butterworth, who resigned soon after Mr Gunn was sacked last month.

On his third ball the former manager hit a four and went on to score two more runs before being caught out at the start of the third over.

He said: 'I only play cricket one a year and this is that once.'

Asked how it felt to be back in a Norwich City shirt Mr Gunn said simply: 'It feels good.'

The match was organised by former Arsenal goalkeeper Alan Miller, who now runs The Jockey pub in Burnham Market.

He said: 'It has been a great day and we have raised money for good causes.

'We have all had a laugh but each side wanted to win. When you have been a professional footballer that will is always there.'

The close run match ended in narrow victory for the Norwich City side who scored 111 runs all out.

Burnham Market scored 106 for nine but ran out of overs.
