VILLAGERS in Wrentham awoke to a dramatic sight this morning as a dust cart carrying out its weekly collection caught fire.

The lorry had been making its early morning Tuesday trade collection in Chapel Road, outside the village's fire station, when driver Ian Wright saw smoke billowing from the back at about 7.49am. He called the fire service and two fire engines, one from Wrentham and the other from Southwold attended the scene.

Fire crews used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to tackle the blaze.

Eye witness Adrienne Schuter said: “The fire, though contained in the body of the cart, took more than an hour to bring under control by gradually emptying it on to the road to be dampened down by hoses.”

The vehicle has now been taken to Wangford tip to unload its rubbish.
